Battery Replacement
When the batteries in your BMW key fob run out and you’re thinking, “Can I replace the battery in a BMW fob?” The answer to this depends on the type of BMW fob you have. The older diamond-shaped BMW fobs, for instance are not designed to be used to replace batteries. They are glued to the backplate, so trying to pry off the backplate will likely do some damage to the fob. The CR2450 battery or CR2032 can be replaced in newer fobs by removing the fob.
For the more well-known smart key models (like the ones in the 1,3, 5, 7 and X series) You can press an X-shaped tab to take off the valet key in metal and then open the access port by using an screwdriver or other thin tool. The opening should reveal a small groove in the port opening. Use the tool to push the tab in and then pull out the valet key to reveal the CR2032 batteries inside. Replace the old battery and then replace the cover.
You’ll need an alternative method if you have a Display key that has a touchscreen. The Display Key is water-resistant but it is not waterproof like the standard fob. You will need to take care to avoid exposing to excessive moisture. While it can survive even a trip through the washing machine, it is best to treat it as you would a smartphone — don’t worry about rain but keep it out from a body of water.
