Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita’s Personality
Macaws are a great companion bird. They are smart and affectionate. They are best with well-rounded families. They are prone to becoming bored and will seek out other ways to entertain themselves when their owners don’t interact with them enough. Macaws that are not properly socialized can become aggressive and even bite. It is important to have clear boundaries set so the macaw does not feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who are a joy to play with, interact with and climb. They must spend at least 2 to 3-hours each day in the outdoors to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They love playing games as well as listening to music and learning tricks. They also enjoy playing in parks and playgrounds while hiking, and also visiting local bars and restaurants. They are not just a great pet but is also a great pet for children.
They can be extremely loud, despite their affection for them. They can also be a nuisance to people living near. They are capable of ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which could be a problem in apartments and condos or in close proximity to children who might be scared by their roar.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. For this reason, DNA testing is the only reliable method of determining the sex. Once the bird’s sex is established, breeding can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. This is not a quick process, and it is important that the owner is patient and understands that this is not an undertaking to be taken lightly. The use of positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and aid in resolving any behavioral issues.
Lolita’s care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to cease performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko’s reintegration into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita might suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to return to sea.
Lolita’s captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They are a danger to her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as an ancestor in a plan to eventually transport her to open waters. The plan included a facility in Washington’s westcoast where she could live the remaining days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the actual ocean and not an actual concrete tank.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals that connect with their families until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. The nation’s most active activists including Ric O’Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her retirement from Seaquarium’s stage and her eventual release into the wild.

This module is accompanied by an instructional manual and a DVD of Lolita teaching the Method for your own practice.

Lolita’s Diet
A balanced diet is essential for the health of a gold and blue macaw. These beautiful birds require high-quality food and lots of fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains. A macaw that is well-fed in captivity could live up to 60 years old. In addition, this majestic bird needs plenty of room to move around and exercise.

Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on Lolita’s status and health however there are many questions. Akromas and others who have been trained or supervised Lolita’s health at some point are concerned about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she is eating 115 pounds of salmon, herring, capelin, and squid daily.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they provide their killer whales, especially Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and while the species is endangered in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that some say is too small for her.
Lolita’s Health
Lolita is beautiful, but her health continues to decline. Animal welfare groups have expressed concern about her and would like to see her returned to the wild. Lolita has been living at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was a tourist attraction for decades. She has suffered from chronic illnesses and a debilitating disease that has left her in a fragile condition.
The Miami Seaquarium, now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not shared information on Lolita’s current state of health. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, www.Buy-macaw.com has published monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is aging rapidly and that her health has declined.
As her captor does not have to divulge this information, it’s unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies collected from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease is often a role in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity.
Despite the ongoing health issues, many are hopeful that Lolita may be closer to a life in the wild than before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to removing the whale of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.
The move comes following years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean and perhaps even be reunited with the orca believed to be her mother. These plans came too late to save the whale who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
